Last year my last grandparent passed away. As her estate was finalised my Dad gave me a small amount of money from my Nan. I hadn’t expected anything at all from the estate but having received such a gift I wanted to make sure I used it for something that would be meaningful and would last a considerable amount of time.
My son had moved from his cot into his own bedroom, however we only put the mattress on the floor to begin with as he used to move around a LOT during the night so wanted him to get used to sleeping in his room on his “bed” without worrying about him rolling out of bed. So making a bed for my son seemed to be the perfect use of the money from my Nan.
I got my wife to look at many many many bed designs until we had worked out what it was she wanted for our son’s bedroom. Then I set about sketching up some basic plans and trying to work out what timber I would need for the project.
I had previously only really worked with reclaimed timber and had not worked with furniture grade timber before. A colleague at work put me in touch with a relative of his who is a local furniture designer/maker who makes incredible furniture. He was kind enough to not only source the timber for me but also pre-sanded it on two sides so once I got the timber home I only had to joint a few edges before getting into ripping the boards to width and cutting the pieces to length to start building the bed.
