Not all things need a reason to begin, but all things have a beginning. This is the beginning of New Leaf Woodworking which is going to be a record of my journey into the world of woodworking.
Growing up I was lucky enough to see my dad build amazing things from wood with minimal tools.
Woodworking at high school was one of the more enjoyable but I would never say I was good at it nor did I really apply myself despite loving the feel, smell and look of timber.
I now work in a high tech industry with products that require ultimate precision and rely on physical processes on scales that are hard for lots of people to imagine and or comprehend.
Woodworking feels so “real” and “warm” and as my woodworking journey begins it feels like it brings more balance to my world and has ignited a passion within me.
The first projects I’ve worked on have been with reclaimed timbers giving weathered forgotten timbers a new life and putting them back in front of people so they can appreciate the beauty of these old timbers.
With my current skill level I often feel guilty that I’ve not done enough to do justice to the wood I’m working with. This is especially true for the amazing timber that a very talented local furniture maker (Lex Stobie) sourced for me so I could make a new bed for my son – will post more about that project soon.
Feel free to have a look around and ask me any questions you want about my projects as I begin trying to learn more about woodworking.
